A New Bruce Timm Batman Animated

A new Bruce Timm Batman animated series is coming to HBO Max.  Batman: Caped Crusader is set to Debut on HBO Max and will be executive produced by Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves.  I was so excited when I saw Bruce Timm’s name attached to this because he is the one who brought us the amazing Batman: The Animated Series.  Batman: The Animated Series was the foundation of great storytelling that brought our favorite superheroes to life.  Along with Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited, you can’t find any better writing or voice acting in a cartoon series ever.  Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and Tim Daly basically defined how those characters should sound ultimately going on to voice some of the great animated movies such as Superman/Batman Public Enemies and Superman/Batman Apocalypse.

J.J. Abrams is the Penultimate Franchise Killer

But, the fact that J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves are attached to this as well is a little bit disconcerting.  J.J. Abrams is the penultimate franchise killer who is as woke and political as they come.  The Disney Star Wars trilogy and rebooted Star Trek movies are laughable with their forced inter sectionalism and political ideologies.  J.J. Abrams has been touted as the next Steven Spielberg for years but what has he actually done that comes even close to that master of directing.  J.J. Abrams created the Lost and Alias TV shows which had promise but then failed, made an original movie in Super 8 which was good but not great, and destroyed two beloved franchises in Star Wars and Star Trek.  That’s not quite the resume if you ask me but Hollywood seems to think he’s the chosen one and now has his hands in the new Amazon Lord of the Rings TV series.  Batman: Caped Crusader will take place in a new world and will focus in on Batman’s noir roots according to HBO Max/Cartoon Network:

“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” the trio said. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”

Sam Register, president of Warner Bros Animation and Cartoon Network Studios had this to say about the new Batman: Caped Crusader:

“’Batman: The Animated Series’ was a masterpiece that shaped the perception of the character for an entire generation of fans,” said Sam Register, president of WBA and Cartoon Network Studios. “It is in that spirit that we are bringing together three master storytellers in J.J., Matt and Bruce – each with their own intuitive understanding and affection for the character – to create a new series that will continue in the same groundbreaking legacy.”

J.J. Abrams is not a Master Storyteller

I wouldn’t say that Abrams has an affection or intuitiveness for Batman or is a master storyteller…you just have to go to his previous works as stated above.  I think that’s HBO Max and Cartoon Network being generous with their adjectives.  In addition, Matt Reeves doesn’t seem to have that extensive of a resume, and by the looks of his ‘The Batman’ movie, starring Robert Pattinson, doesn’t seem to have a grasp on the character as well or at least what the fans want.  Let us just hope that Bruce Timm will be left alone and is able to do what he does best with Batman: Caped Crusader, and hopefully deliver us another great Batman animated series.
