An Abomination to the MCU

The Disney Plus series ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’, and its director, star, and head writer, are an abomination to the MCU.  When you hire talentless, spiteful hacks to helm a popular Marvel comics character, you reap what you sow, and that’s exactly what Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige allowed to happen to ‘She-Hulk’, and frankly, all of the movies and Disney Plus content since ‘Avengers: Endgame’.  ‘She-Hulk’ has been an abysmal failure for Disney Plus, and one in a list of the last 11 offerings from Marvel Studios that has failed or been forgettable and unwatchable.  ‘She-Hulk’s’ director, writer, and main star, however, have taken the MCU’s latest Disney Plus installment into the gutter, by saying that not only can you have a supposedly kids focused superhero show be sexed up, but also admitted to trolling the fans, and taking ‘She-Hulk’ into a direction that would purposely piss off the fans.  How does Kevin Feige square this with fans that have just been voicing their opinion on clearly sub par content.  Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios haven’t had a memorable, legitimate hit since 2019.  How does Bob Chapek square that with investors who already have questions regarding a failing Lucasfilm?  Trolling fans because they don’t like your content is not a good look for Marvel Studios, and Kevin Feige, and reeks of insecurity and shallowness.  Feige needs to right the ship soon, or the MCU just might become as insignificant as the Star Wars franchise.

Disney Apparently Likes to Promote Sex to Kids in Their Content

In an article from Polygon, the director of ‘She-Hulk’ said she wanted to make a sex positive show that also related to kids.  So more of the same stuff from a Disney entity that feels adult topic themes and shopping for feminine hygiene products in a kids animated TV show, are okay to show to children.  In the article, director Kat Coiro talks about how there seemed to be fear around sex and the idea of sex positivity…whatever that supposed to mean.

“We always felt like there was a fear around sex and around the idea of sex positivity.  So it was our job to keep having the conversation. We wanted to say, Look, she’s a woman in her 30s navigating modern life; sex is a part of that story, and [ask] how far could we go.  Maslany was game to take the character there.  I know it’s something that’s very important to her, this idea of sex positivity and kind of smashing the rules when it comes to women and the way that they’re perceived. A lot of the conversations about sexualization in the show came from Tatiana, and were with Tatiana.”

That’s ironic since we’ve had superhero movies like ‘Wonder Woman 1984′, who weren’t afraid to flaunt the character’s sexuality, and even take it as far as raping an unwilling male, when Wonder Woman wished Steve Trevor back into an unbeknownst participant, and then ultimately had sex with him.  I guess Kat Coiro and Tatiana Maslany forgot about that sex “positivity”.  It’s also interesting to note that Coiro is alleging that there are those out there that don’t like women as superheroes.  No one critical of the refuse that was Disney Plus’ ‘She-Hulk’ ever had a problem with Disney Plus series having a woman as a superhero…nobody.  Did Coiro, Jessica aGo, and Tatiana Maslany forget about the smash hit that was Wonder Woman?  I also remember plenty of fans clamoring for a Black Widow movie when it was relevant to make one.  They are all being dishonest.  But I digress.  Coiro would go on in the article to say that she would receive voicemails from 9 year olds wondering what was going to happen next in ‘She-Hulk’, and explained that they wanted to make a ‘She-Hulk’ that was for everyone, including kids…all the while the main character was navigating her sex life.

“We wanted to make it realistic, and about a woman navigating sex, but also make it something that everybody can enjoy, including children, because there is an element of the show that is really fun for young people.”

Let’s Make Fun of Fans…That’s the Ticket to Success

That’s not the only thing that’s disturbing about the director, writer, and lead actresses’ direction they wanted to take ‘She-Hulk’.  They also admitted in an interview with Variety, that ‘She-Hulk’s’ whole premise was to troll male Marvel fans who would not be pleased with what the show was producing.  Huh.  Sounds like this show was run by a plethora of creatively bankrupt wannabes.  Lead actress Tatiana Maslany took it a step further, and basically confirmed that premise in an episode where villains appear to antagonize the She Hulk’s character that look eerily similar to popular YouTuber Doomcock.  Maslany said that head writer Jessica Gao would anticipate how Marvel fans would react by making them appear as villains in the show.

“Jessica Gao is a genius and knows about the culture we’re living in and her position in it when she’s writing these stories about a woman superhero.  She knows what that response is going to be.  As a cast, it was delightful sending each other these troll responses, like ‘Oh my god, give them a week and then they’re going to literally see this pop up verbatim in the show and become the villains of the show.’ It was thrilling.”

Maslany would follow that up by saying that her She-Hulk character was an F-U to male Marvel fans because they are entitled and that there’s so much resistance to a female superhero in their world.

“Reading the script, it was so true. There’s so much resistance to a woman just existing in the space of superheroes.  There’s always going to be that,” she added. “I sort of anticipated it. It’s why I also feel it’s important. There’s such an entitlement to space held by certain people, and to even exist as She-Hulk is like a f–k-you, and I love that.”

How About Kevin Feige Hires Some Talent That Actually Cares About These Characters

Boy oh boy oh boy.  These “creators” really don’t get it.  ‘She-Hulk’ is Disney Plus’ worst MCU show to date.  But this show and its creators have taken it a step further by being blatantly honest in the show and in public….to their detriment.   They hate the fans that made the MCU the success that it was.  When you tell the fans to f**k off, and that the whole premise of your show was to piss the those fans off, you are creatively bankrupt and broadcasting that you just don’t care if you please the fans.  How is that a formula for success?  Well it isn’t, and neither is admitting that you want to make a show about a character navigating their sex life, while making it family friendly and safe for children to watch.  No one’s trying to be a prude here, but how about making a superhero show that the fans want to see?  How about hiring some talent that’s actually familiar with the character and its lore, instead of having group fan bashing sessions.  The average comic book fan wants to see a lot of action and muscle, and escape into a world of make believe, not the rom-com that director Kat Coiro envisions.

The MCU is Quickly Becoming a Laughing Stock

Marvel Studios is heading down the same path that Disney’s other major studios are, and are perilously close to becoming irrelevant.  The upcoming Black Panther 2 looks like a complete borefest, and phase 5, including the Secret Invasion series looks just as bad and forgettable as all of phase 4.  Kevin Feige’s MCU has become a platform for inexperienced show runners to scream about their grievances towards “toxic” male superhero fans.  It’s pathetic, and is only making the once vaunted MCU a laughing stock.  But that’s okay, because fans of pop culture will always find something else that’s worthy of their time, while the MCU withers away, and becomes nothing more than distant memory of what once could have been.
