The Marvel Logo is to Blame

Kevin Feige has an ego the size of our planet.  In an article over at the Hollywood Reporter, Feige claims that the reason Marvel movies are not being nominated for Oscars, is because of the Marvel logo.  Come on, man…the Marvel logo is to blame?  I don’t know any fanboy that goes to a Marvel movie hoping that it’s Oscar worthy.  We go to see Marvel superhero movies to be entertained and see our favorite heroes kick some ass.  Feige is on his latest pitch of firsts, because he wants to see ‘Shang-Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings’ be nominated for best picture.  This would make, in Feige’s eyes, the first time an Asian American superhero was nominated for best picture.  I’m sorry, but ‘Shang-Chi’ is no Oscar worthy movie…it barely squeaked a profit at the box office(I don’t think it did).  But, according to Kevin Feige and director Destin Daniel Cretton, ‘Shang-Chi’ is a feel good movie like ‘Good Will Hunting’, and deserves to be nominated.  Kevin feige is demanding to the Oscars, just like he did in 2018 with ‘Black Panther’ that ‘Shang-Chi’ be nominated for an Academy Award.  And why?  Because it will be another first that Kevin Feige can notch on his diversity and inclusion belt.

“I think we are always at a deficit because of the Marvel logo and because of a genre bias that certainly exists. I just loved that for a shining moment there with Black Panther that was put aside and the work was recognized for the achievement that it was.  There are a lot of comic fans that didn’t know who Shang-Chi was. And yet the work that Destin did and Dave did and Sue did and Joel did, created something new that connected with audiences.  We recognized it, the audience recognized it, and I sure would love the hard work of all of these people who are telling their story to get recognized.”

Black Panther Was Moderately Enjoyable at Best

Kevin Feige’s pitch to get ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ nominated for best picture, or any other category for that matter, is probably going to fall on deaf ears.  The only reason ‘Black Panther’ was nominated for best picture in 2019, was purely political.  I could name a few other Marvel movies that were better contenders if we’re using ‘Black Panther’ as the template.  ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ comes to mind.  And, I’m not saying that that movie was Oscar worthy at all, but I am saying that ‘Infinity War’ was a far better written story and was damn near the most perfect Marvel movie there was.  So, if Kevin Feige is so adamant that Marvel movies should be nominated more for Oscars, then why didn’t we hear a peep out of him about ‘Infinity War’?  Because it wasn’t a political first that Feige could take credit for.  ‘Black Panther’ was an enjoyable popcorn flick, but it wasn’t rewatchable, wasn’t cohesive, and the graphics were horrible and distracting.  But, back in the summer of 2018, in an interview at vox.com, Kevin Feige was making his pitch for ‘Black Panther’

“I think there are a lot of amazing artists that helped to make that movie, and it would be wonderful if they could be recognized. Almost everyone involved in that movie, bringing that movie together, is great, and it would be wonderful to see if they’re recognized. We’ll see. This genre, typically not.

And I think it would be a wonderful thing for Panther and for our production designer Hannah [Beachler], and our costume designer Ruth [Carter], and for Ryan [Coogler] who co-wrote the script with Joe Robert Cole, and of course directed the movie. And Michael B. Jordan, and Chadwick [Boseman] and Lupita [Nyong’o] and Letitia [Wright].

There’s amazing performances, amazing artistry in that. I’d love to see them recognized, and I’d love to see this genre recognized. Yes, they’re visual effects, yes, they are fun explosions, yes, there are spaceships. But these are all hand-crafted. Maybe it’s in front of a computer; it’s often actual sets, actual hand-built costumes. As much passion and artistry and talent goes into every single one we do; it’d be amazing for them to be recognized.”

No One is Talking About ‘Shang-Chi’

In addition to that, Feige pretty much has the Hollywood media campaigning for him to recognize ‘Shang-Chi’ as a viable contender.  Much like mainstream news outlets, the mainstream Hollywood media, never gives its audiences the whole story and only reflects their political bias.  The Hollywood reporter does much the same with its high accolades of ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’.  It claims that the movie turned an obscure hero in Shang-Chi, into a cultural icon.

“The film, Marvel’s first to star an Asian lead, turned a little-known comic book character into a cultural icon and turned Liu into a star.”

A cultural icon?  Really?  No it didn’t.  In fact, other than your Hollywood mainstream media shills, no one is talking about ‘Shang-Chi’ or its star Simu Liu.  It’s not even an afterthought.  Was ‘Shang-Chi’ entertaining?  Mildly, at best. But, in my opinion, it no way represented the true force of nature that was the comic book character.  When you’re an inexperienced big box office director, like Destin Daniel Cretton is,  and you go out to make a big budget superhero movie, your first thought can’t be…”I want to make it resemble ‘Good Will Hunting'”.  This is the problem with the last three Marvel movies.  Look at the colossal dud the ‘The Eternals’ was.

Marvel Will Fail Every Time They Politicize Their Characters

Superhero movies shouldn’t be made with the intent that they might be a contender at the Oscars.  Their original intent was to bring comic book heroes to life on the big screen.  Kevin Feige is an attention getter that wants to be in with SJW’s and is making content that reflects his political point of view.  He is going to fail every time and the proof is there with ‘Loki’, ‘WandaVision’, ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, ‘Black Widow’, ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’, and ‘The Eternals’.  Those are all phase four entries and solely under Kevin Feige’s reign.  No one is rewatching or talking about any of those shows or movies.  And, why are they not talking about them?  Because everyone one of those depictions have bastardized characters that comic book fans grew up with, and politicized them in such a way that have made fans just not care anymore.  You can’t make superhero movies that have a political agenda and hope that they will succeed at the box office.  Superhero movies should 100% just entertain and stay faithful to the original history.  I hope Kevin Feige wins his campaign to get ‘Shang-Chi’ nominated for best picture.  It will just further prove where his focus is and maybe more and more of the audience will stop going to see the refuse that is coming out of Marvel.
