A New Renaissance in Cinema

A New Renaissance in Cinema

I can’t remember the last time I went to the movies and felt like I was a kid again enjoying all that 1980’s greatness.  But ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ has done just that.  Jason Reitman should be thanked on bended knee, for a return to cinematic greatness.  He promised us that he would deliver Ghostbusters back to the fans with ‘Afterlife‘ and I can tell you that promise has been enthusiastically fulfilled.  From the opening scene to the very last post credit scene…yes you have to stay until the very last credit rolls…’Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ succeeded on all levels.  There wasn’t any woke garbage or political agendas to be seen anywhere and it was just pure unadulterated cinema magic.  ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’, in my opinion, will go down as the beginning of a new renaissance in cinema, that brought us quality storytelling.

From Beginning to End, ‘Afterlife’ Got it Right

Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman who brought us the original ‘Ghostbusters’, delivered a movie that paid homage to how movies were made in the 80’s.  Studio heads challenged Reitman to making a low budget Ghostbusters movie and the challenge was accepted.  For just 75 million dollars(half of the abysmal all female led Ghostbusters 2016 budget), Reitman produced a superior movie, that was made with the same kind of special effects, that were used for the original Ghostbusters movie.  The attention to detail in the storytelling was damn near perfect and I’m going to have to see it a few more times to see what I missed.  But I have to say, that the thing that grabbed me, and made me realize that this movie was going to be epic, was the opening soundtrack sequence.  As soon as I heard those piano notes that were the same as the opening notes from the original Ghostbusters, I knew I was in for a ride.  The soundtrack was the soul of this movie, and Rob Simonsen, who composed the soundtrack for ‘Afterlife’, nailed it.  ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ gave fans of the franchise what they have been looking for in a movie for decades.  ‘Afterlife’ made you feel like a kid again and gave you all the excitement that went along with going to the movies.  What was long lost, has now been found again with ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’.

‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ De-canonized ‘Ghostbusters’ 2016

The biggest payoff in ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’, however, is the homage it pays to the late Harold Ramis and his character Egon Spengler.  Harold Ramis along with Dan Akroyd, wrote the original ‘Ghostbusters’, so it was a very touching and fitting tribute to a very talented actor, writer, and director who is sorely missed in pop culture.  The second biggest payoff is that ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ retconned ‘Ghostbusters’ 2016 and completely canned it from official canon.  ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife is officially the sequel to the original ‘Ghostbusters’, and that is something the fans will be eternally grateful for.  The all female led ‘Ghostbuster’ 2016 was an abysmal, political agenda infused, hot heap of you know what.  It failed miserably at the box office, and almost destroyed any hope of seeing a true Ghostbusters sequel.  Praise Jason Reitman.  If you haven’t had the chance to see this movie, go see it and show it some love.  ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is a truly welcome relief from the garbage that we have been subjected to over the past couple of decades.
