In a new report from ForeignPolicy.com by Jack Detsch, Kelly Kimball, and Robbie Gramer, the State Department has admitted that there are upwards of 14,000 U.S. legal permanent residents still left behind in Afghanistan. How many Americans residents in Afghanistan? 14,000? Say it ain’t so Joe. That number was released, in private, to congressional aids by the Sate Department, who in turn, denied tracking those very same numbers they released. Brian McKeon, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources was asked on Capitol Hill by Republican Representative Chris Smith, about those numbers, and McKeon responded by stating the State Department didn’t track those numbers. So what’s the deal? Sounds like someone in government is lying.
“We don’t track [legal permanent residents],” McKeon responded. “It’s a good question why we don’t,” he added, suggesting the lack of clarity might be because the State Department does not require Americans and legal permanent residents traveling abroad to report their whereabouts.”
According to Foreign Policy’s report, this new number sheds light on just how chaotic the Biden administration’s response was to the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“The new number sheds light on the extent to which the United States’ chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan left U.S. citizens, residents, and important Afghan allies in the lurch as a lightning-fast Taliban offensive swept across the country. McKeon revealed 289 U.S. citizens remain in Afghanistan as of Tuesday and a further 81 Americans are ready to depart. McKeon added that 140 Americans have departed in the last week.”
The State Department is Purposely Hiding How Many American Residents are Actually Left behind
Whatever the number is, it’s abhorrent that we left any American citizens, whether they were permanent, legal, or green card holders, should not matter. We should have taken them all out. Biden knew that Afghanistan was going to be taken over back in July, with his now infamous call with then President Ashraf Ghani, in which Biden asked Ghani to give the perception that everything was fine and in control in Afghanistan. Well, we know how that turned out and Biden was never held responsible for lying to the American people. The Foreign Policy report also stated that lawmakers are increasingly frustrated with the State Department on its handling of the statistics, on who is actually left behind, and accuse the State Department of purposely hiding the actual numbers.
“Lawmakers have criticized the State Department for being too slow to release specific numbers on how many citizens, legal permanent residents, and Afghans who supported the U.S. war effort remain in the country. Administration officials said the numbers are difficult to track and constantly shifting while infuriated U.S. lawmakers charge the administration is failing in its duty to keep track of the statistics or is keeping the full scope of people left behind under wraps. In the month after the U.S. withdrawal, the State Department repeatedly said there were around 100 U.S. citizens still in the country seeking to leave—until it revealed in recent weeks there were around 400 people.”
