The Last Straw For Fans

The Last Straw For Fans

Batman bisexual?  Really…you don’t say.  That’s something new that DC Comics hasn’t tried before.  Well except for Robin, Green Lantern, The Riddler, Bat-Woman, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Superman, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, and so many more.  We get it DC, you’re one with the inclusive crowd and need to wrap yourself in so much of the inclusivity, that you’ve forgotten about your core reader base.  The dreadful male population in the 20-50 age group, that doesn’t give a crap about your LGBTQ badge of honor, and just wants to read a great story, minus the ridiculous politics of representation.  Because in the end, all DC Comics is doing, is alienating and discriminating against one group in favor of another.  That other group being the LGBTQ community that is an infinitesimal portion of the population in comparison.   So your formula for success, is to keep retconning the sexual orientation of well established characters, so you can score a bump in sales.  Doing this to Batman, your most popular selling character, seems like you’re shooting yourself in the foot, and the last straw for fans, who have had enough of the appropriation of our beloved characters.

Self Destructive Behavior

‘Batman: The Knight’, is a series written by Chip Zdarsky, who also writes the main Batman title, and focuses on Bruce Waynes training before he became Batman.  The speculation that Batman might be bisexual first started in issue #5, where Bruce Wayne shares a tender moment with a close friend named Anton, where it is insinuated by the art, that they would kiss before being interrupted…concluding that Bruce Wayne was exploring his sexuality.  Fast forward to issue #8, and it is all but confirmed that Bruce Wayne/Batman is indeed bisexual, when the young Bruce Wayne has a conversation about doomed love, and how Anton broke Bruce Wayne’s heart.  Why DC would think that this was a good idea for the only character able to crack the top 50 in sales, among all of their characters is baffling, and akin to self destructive behavior.

The LGBTQ Community Should be Enraged

The Batman character is a cash cow for DC comics, so to suddenly change his established history in order to make a few bucks during the big reveal, is something of a head scratcher, smells of defeat, but is not at all unexpected given DC’s recent history.  DC Comics has basically made 70% of their characters part of the LGBTQ community, and not because they care so deeply, but rather because they are using it as a gimmick to stoke sales.  The LGBTQ community should be enraged that a company is using them for monetary gain.  But of course DC Comics will not be called out, and will instead be lauded as being brave and courageous by the legacy media.  For example, ‘Superman: Son of Kal-El’ #5 had the new “Superman” of earth come out as gay.  The issue sold like hotcakes, but has since plunged through the basement in sales, and can barely crack 30,000 copies or come close to breaking the top 50.  Why?  Because issue #5 was a speculator issue that had potential value because it was a first of something, not because there was so much interest in seeing a Superman character come out as gay.

DC Comics Will Effectively be No More

All this sexual identity retconning, makes one wonder if DC is doing this on purpose.  Well, of course their doing this on purpose, because they’ve been taken over by activists who feel their preferences and orientations need to be represented, and are being run by editors with the same radical views, with their president Jim Lee no where to be found and allowing this to happen.  Are they purposely tanking their company, because it sure seems like it as they bleed readership, and see more and more of their comic book titles fail to even reach the top 100.  Making one of their founding characters bisexual for the sake of selling a few issues is an insult to the character, and worldwide devoted fans, who simply want a good story devoid of the everyday crap they see in the real world.  Bruce Wayne/Batman, has been straight and in relationships with women, since 1939, when he dated Julie Madison in Detective Comics #31.  This is not disputed and is fact.  Nowhere has there ever been a hint or evidence that Batman was ever interested in men.  But this is all DC Comics has…gimmicks.  Gimmicks that have only aimed to divide fans.  But this is the preverbal straw that breaks the camel’s back. If Batman being retconned as bisexual is actually confirmed, DC Comics should, and will be no more.  They will have effectively turned their backs on, and abandoned decades of well established lore, all because they thought bending the knee to radical activists in their company, would somehow sell more comics.  It won’t, and will only cement fans abandoning them for independent and crowd funded comic books that actually want to tell a great superhero story instead of preaching at us to do better.
