In Unexpected News…Superman’s Gay

You know, I’ve been a fan of comic books my entire life.  They were a much needed escape when I was younger and they are a much needed break today when I just don’t want to think about anything.  Comic books introduced me to characters that I fell in love with and inspired my creativity.  Superman is the pinnacle of that imagination for me.  He was created by two Jewish kids that just wanted to escape the harsh reality of their own lives and pretend, for just one minute, that they were like Superman.  Superman, and his creation, epitomizes what the American Dream can be for all Americans.  When I read my first Superman comic, Superman # 314 by Martin Pasko and Curt Swan, I was instantly obsessed with comic books and Superman even more.  The story involved an evil maniac named Amalak and he infected all of Central City(There was a journalist’s convention away from Metropolis)with a disease known as journalist’s disease.  Superman defeated Amalak of course, and that story is what drove my love for the character of Superman.  Superman is a fictional character, but he’s also an ideal.  An ideal that teaches you to be a better person, to right wrongs, to stand up for what you believe in no matter the conflict, and be the example that we can look up to.  He literally was “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” in all shapes and forms.  But now, in expected, unexpected news…Superman comes out as gay in issue #5 of ‘Superman: Son of Kal-El’.  We weren’t surprised, as Ethan Van Sciver told us this was coming a while ago, but we were tentatively hopeful it might not be true…I say that in jest of course.

The Fans Don’t Care About Your Social Agenda

I’ve had all kinds of interactions with friends and strangers, of all shapes, sizes, color, and gender, and never once did any of those interactions turn

into a complaint that Superman didn’t represent their identity, skin tone, or culture.  The conversations were always about the story and what was going to happen next.  But now, with the event that DC made with Robin coming out as bi-sexual and Superman now coming out as gay, DC comics has definitively destroyed what their comic books and characters were meant to be in favor of a social agenda, that frankly, the fans don’t really care about. Comic books, as they are published now, are representing that minuscule 5% of the worlds population and alienating a majority of the fandom that could care less if you’re gay, gender neutral, non-binary, black, white, yellow, or polka dotted.  Both DC and Marvel have allowed social justice warrior activists into their creative teams all in the name of diversity and inclusion, and allowed them to take over an American past time that used to be just plain fun and pure escapism.  Social justice warriors are nothing more than activists who have infiltrated our entertainment and have basically stated it’s their way or the highway.  Ethan Van Sciver, who used to work at DC comics, and was ostracized for his political beliefs explains it much better in this video clip from The Daily Wire:

The Goal is to Rid Comics of the Evil That is the Heterosexual

DC comics has managed to make just about everyone of their characters part of the LGBTQ+ community.  The original Green Lantern, Alan Scott came out as gay when he was originally married to a woman, Wonder Woman is now queer, Aqualad is queer, Batwoman is a lesbian, all of the female villains in Gotham are gay or bi-sexual, Robin is bi-sexual, and now Superman is gay.  Granted he’s the son of Clark Kent, but Clark Kent is gone and Jonathan Kent has replaced him as the Superman of Earth.  The list goes on and on along with the many side characters that DC has introduced as transgender, gay, or bi-sexual.  DC is making, on purpose, representation the focus, instead of the story and that’s why comics are no longer fun.  Some in the LGBTQ community will say that fans of these characters are not tolerant and that’s why there needs to be more representation.  How much representation does there need to be?  Gay, queer, bi-sexual characters, characters of different colors and cultural backgrounds, have been around for decades.  But their sexual orientations or cultural backgrounds were never the forefront of the story and pushed on us in every page.  They were heroes in their own right trying to save the world as well.  This obsession that the majority of us need to be taught the ways of what it’s like to be a transgender, lesbian, or bi-sexual is ridiculous.  Fans of these established characters could care less what you do or who you are, just leave our characters alone and create your own.  Stop trying to take over a brand that symbolized American greatness for generations.  In an example of how evil these radical social justice warriors can be, there was a recent Twitter post from a fan who asked one of these clowns how much representation in comics would satisfy them.  Their response was that all of them should be represented and heterosexuality should be erased.

DC’s Social Agenda is More About Numbers and Surviving

If you ask the question why Superman needs to be gay, the only response you’ll get from SJW’s is, that the way they identify should be represented in comics.  Again, why?  Why does does Superman need to be gay to make you feel good?  If all it takes is a comic book character being turned gay to make you feel good then I think you have deeper problems.  The LGBTQ community doesn’t understand Superman, unfortunately, so therefore, DC comics, in response, felt the need to create something that accommodated those feelings.  That’s nonsense and a poor business strategy.  All of a sudden, now that Superman has kissed a pink haired guy, you now understand who Superman is…that’s shallow and dishonest.  Making Superman gay is also just another way for DC comics to get attention to inflate sales.  They come out with 30 different covers, the retail shops are forced into buying set quantities, which in turn, makes it look like it was a success when in fact, those issues will just be collecting dust on the shelves.  This spotlight only lasts for a short period and then DC does it all over again.  They are floundering as a company and are just trying to stay above water.  So, whose next on the chopping block?  Will Bruce Wayne all of a sudden come out as transgender and Barry Allen non-binary?  It’s nonsense and comic books were never made to ensure representation.  It’s a gimmick, and it needs to stop.  Even across the sea they know what DC and Marvel are doing with beloved characters is shameful.

DC comics is Losing Fans Every Time They Pull Stunts Like This

One of my proudest moments as a comic book fan, was when I took my son to his first comic book convention when he was just three years old.  I already knew that he was going to be hooked because one of his favorite movies to watch over and over again, was ‘Superman: The Movie’ with Christopher Reeve.  He could recite that movie backwards and forwards and when he got to go to a convention, and see the world that comic books had to offer, well that moment of pure excitement was irreplaceable.  We haven’t been to a comic book convention in a couple of years because of Covid, but we also haven’t been because of what DC and Marvel have done to some of our favorite characters.  In 2014, for example, my son and I started watching ‘The Flash’ on the CW.  It quickly became my sons favorite comic book character as we were hooked week after week watching ‘The Flash’.  He was nine years old at the time of the first season.  Fast forward five years later, and what was once an engaging, great storytelling adventure, quickly became a platform for diversity, inclusion, and representation that had the main character basically a side show in his own series.  And why?  Because having a white male running the show was problematic so the reigns were handed over to his black(race swapped in the comics as well)wife Iris Allen, who offered nothing to the show but was the bestest evar!  It was disappointing and we stopped watching the train wreck.  And that is basically what has happened to all of the heroes we loved watching or reading.

There Are Alternatives to DC and Marvel Comics

DC and Marvel comics have managed to disenfranchise their fanbase in exchange for quick social justice points from a group of people that aren’t the majority customer.  I myself stopped collecting anything new over two years ago because the virtue signaling was so comically apparent.  I’ve started buying comics from those creators that care about the story, like Ethan Van Sciver, who don’t shove political talking points down my throat every chance they get.  Superman coming out as gay is no surprise, but it does close the door on me as a potential customer.  I have resigned to the fact that I will just have to enjoy the comics I read while growing up, that were not used as platforms for anti-American messaging, representation, or inclusion.  Lord knows there are still plenty of back issues to collect of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, who were written and drawn by fans themselves and who cared about the sanctity these characters represented.
