‘Naomi’ debuts 1/11 on the CW, and is yet another example of how Warner Bros. and The CW are out of touch with their audience. But, onward CW, with another character we don’t care about. “Naomi’ is based on a comic book character created by Brian Michael Bendis, and was cancelled after just 6 issues. Why is this show even seeing the light of day you ask. Well, despite what writer and executive producer Ava Duvernay says, it’s about diversity and inclusion. ‘Naomi’ was an abysmal failure in the comics, barely breaking 100,000 copies between all issues combined. In October of the year it came out, after it was cancelled, DC tried to sell fans a hard cover copy of issues 1-6, and that only sold 2,916 copies. That’s not only a failure, but a catastrophic failure. ‘Naomi’ might do initially well with younger audiences, but if precedence tells us anything, ‘Naomi’ will wane precipitously as the show progresses, because The CW has an amazing lack of awareness on who their audience actually is.
Naomi Will be the Bestest Her(o) Everrrr!
Naomi is one of the last beings of an alternate universe, sent to Prime Earth by her parents before they were killed. Naomi is adopted by another alien being named Rann from Oregon, who is posing as a human. Whether or not this will come to fruition in the TV series is yet to be seen. As a result of Naomi’s curiosity, brought on by a battle between Monul and Superman in her town, Naomi begins to look into her own origins. Rann tells Naomi the circumstances in which she was found, and hands her an object that was found with her when she landed on Prime Earth. This object imbues Naomi with powers and abilities that rival Superman’s. Are we getting a retelling of Superman’s origins vibe yet? I mean, how unoriginal do you have to get. But wait, it gets better. Naomi can conveniently control these powers and abilities, because the object that gave her the powers, can give her the dexterity to use them. Sounds like Rey in Force Awakens, who can instantaneously be one with the Force. It’s so unbelievable, and that’s why audiences hated the Naomi comic book. No originality whatsoever. Hopefully in The CW’s ‘Naomi’, we actually get a character that goes through struggle, sacrifice, and defeat, and is not just one dimensional.
The CW Being Sold is Evidence That Woke Doesn’t Work
My biggest problem with “Naomi’, however, is not so much with the character, but with its writer and executive producer. Ava Duvernay admits that there will be identity politics in ‘Naomi’, but says she wants to normalize that diversity and inclusion. In an article from Deadline, Duvernay said that ‘Naomi’ isn’t about race or gender, but about normalizing that.
“It’s not about representation, it’s about normalization. We’re doing really muscular things that relates to race and gender and class but we’re doing it by playing it normal like it’s just a part of the everyday. I say it kiddingly but it’s real. The more you can portray images without underlining or highlighting them and putting a star next to them. By showing a different type of hero that centers a girl, a Black girl, that centers different kinds of folks. We start to make that normal and that’s a radical and revolutionary thing.”
I suppose in Duvernay’s world of Hollywood, who look through their narrow minded lens’, they would think that placing race, gender, and identity politics across almost all of our entertainment is normal. But that’s just the thing. It isn’t normal for most of America who is right of center. Most of our entertainment is governed by an elite few who think they know what we want to watch. Hollywood thinks that by constantly force feeding us stories, that are more focused on checking the appropriate boxes, rather than quality stories, regardless of race, color, or gender, that they will conform us into their way of thinking. Well, I can tell you it’s not working. Just look at the slate of movies from Marvel Studios this year that failed, or The CW being sold, or the lack of subscribers Disney Plus has, because of their woke entertainment as evidence.
How About DC Just Writes a Good Story Without Focusing on Identity Politics
I’m going to reserve judgement on ‘Naomi’ until I watch it, but my hopes are not high. This show is being executive produced by someone who associates with an activist hate group known as BLM, thinks Kyle Rittenhouse is a white supremacist murderer, threatened white guys with unemployment based on their skin color, and runs through her media company Array, LEAP(Law Enforcement Accountability Project) that implied Kyle Rittenhouse was a white supremacist. Duvernay is an activist that promotes hate and division, and we have her writing for a character that idolizes Superman. A character who symbolizes and inspires hope.
Kyle Rittenhouse has been acquitted of all charges, including first-degree reckless homicide, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, first-degree intentional homicide, attempted first-degree intentional homicide, and first-degree recklessly endangering safety. #LEAPAction pic.twitter.com/cGJqGRu1J1

Just Another Character We Don’t Care About
Duvernay’s comments on the Kyle Rittenhouse trial alone, prove how she’s all in on fostering the hate and division, rather than setting a Superman like example and inspiring hope. Did she even watch the trial and see the actual facts come out about the case? I’m guessing no with blanket statements of white supremacy thrown about. With all of her focus on individual lives lost at the hands of the police, how about solutions to all the black lives lost in cities like Chicago. 834 people lost their lives in that city in 2021, more than New York and Los Angeles, and the most since 1996. Where’s the outcry for all of those lives lost? Crickets. It’s all about the narrative. Duvernay’s Array studios is also responsible for bringing us ‘Colin in Black and White’. The story of Colin Kaepernick that compares an NFL training camp to that of selling slaves in a cotton field. How is that not promoting and propagandizing divisiveness and hate? Ava Duvernay can’t convince me that identity politics in her ‘Naomi’ will just look “normal”. With the current climate in Hollywood of white man bad, I am not convinced one bit. You can’t normalize something you’re actively pushing on us on purpose, and put it under the veil of everyday. We will see through that every time, and tune out, just like we are for every one of The CW’s woke soap opera trash. Your “normalization” of race, gender, and class is just a convenient marketing slogan to get us to buy in to your woke propaganda.
