Where No 90 Year Old Has Gone Before

Where No 90 Year Old Has Gone Before
William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk

According to TMZ, William Shatner is scheduled to board Jeff Bezo’s ‘Blue Origin’s New Shepard’ next month.  William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk in the original ‘Star Trek’ TV series and subsequent movies, is finally going to go where no 90 year old has gone before.  He will not be the first senior citizen to do this, as that title was taken by pioneering pilot Wally Funk at 82, but he will be the first 90 year old to have that privilege.  This will be the second flight of ‘New Shepard’ the first taking place on July 20, 2021 and consisting of Bezos, his brother Mark, Dutch student Oliver Daemen, and Wally Funk.

William Shatner and His Boundless Energy

This will be such a remarkable feat for someone of Shatner’s age…but is it really?  Shatner seems to be ageless and something of an anomaly.  His energy seems boundless and he looks 20 years younger than another Captain of the Enterprise, Patrick Stewart, who is 81.  Shatner is an avid equestrian, raising his own horses on a ranch in Kentucky, and still riding to this day.  He has been one of the most active celebrities since his film debut in 1951 of ‘Butler’s Night Off’, never, seemingly, to take a break.  If William Shatner isn’t in a movie, he’s doing a TV show, if he’s not doing a TV show, he’s making a documentary, if he’s not making a documentary, he’s writing another book, and if he’s not writing another book, he’s recording another album.  The man just doesn’t stop.

To Boldly Go Where No 90 Year Old Has Gone Before

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of William Shatner.  Captain Kirk was a hero for me growing up and it was William Shatner that made Captain Kirk who he was…a daring, courageous, brave, and loyal character for all of us fans to look up to and emulate.  Like William Shatner once said of the character of Jim Kirk, “We were basically one and the same, although Jim Kirk was just about perfect, and, of course, I am perfect.”  Love William Shatner’s sense of humor.  He is a fans actor that doesn’t preach to us and often gives Hollywood a dose of common sense.  For someone of William Shatner’s success and stature, it will be great to see the actual Captain of the Enterprise travel into space one last time and boldly go where no 90 year old man has gone before…
