Henry Cavill announced, via his instagram, that he would be doing a Highlander reboot with John Wick director Chad Stahelski. This is extremely exciting news for those dedicated Highlander fans that only want the best from their franchises. Henry Cavill has proven time and time again to be a dedicated fan in his own right to various franchises such as Superman, The Witcher, and of course, Highlander. He has admitted that he is protective of the characters he portrays such as Superman, specifically stating, in the past, that he was protective of the Superman character and what he represents. Deadline dropped an exclusive that can be read here.
‘Highlander’ was a Master Stroke of Art
One of my regrets was never seeing Highlander in the theaters when it debuted in 1986. I saw this on VHS and was floored by the cinematography and creativeness. The visuals that were represented, as Connor MaCleod(played by Christopher Lambert) tells his story through flashbacks, were amazing and really gave you an emotional connection to the character. Directed by Russell Mulcahy and written by Gregory Widen, Highlander was a master stroke of art for film that was never fully replicated by the ensuing sequels
and TV shows. They weren’t bad, it’s just that they never quite grabbed the magic that the first Highlander did. We should also mention the soundtrack, which was scored by Queen, added an additional emotional connection to the characters and story. Perfectly cast with Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown, this movie brewed a perfect storm of talent that really defined the Highlander franchise.
I’m Not a Big Fan of Reboots
Fast forward to 2021 and it’s announced that Henry Cavill will be starring in a reboot of the original Highlander movie. I’m not a big fan of reboots, especially lately, as they all tend to be bad clones of their former selves. They usually never do as well as the originals and, now, always are made with the proper representation and inclusivity as the priority and the story a backdrop that is overlooked and taken for granted.

That being said, I am tentatively excited about this reboot because who is involved. You have Henry Cavill who never alienated the fans or berates them for having an opinion and you have Chad Stahelski who helmed the John Wick movies with Keanu Reeves. Both have never let politics creep into the main narrative of their projects and have always been story first. I am excited and can’t wait to see what unfolds and will be first in line at the theater to see a new Highlander movie in all its glory.
